How to Use a Baitcasting Reel

Bait reels date back to the mid-1700s and first became popular in the 1870s. They are best for larger freshwater fish such as largemouth bass, northern pike and muskie. Larger sizes are used for trolling larger saltwater fish such as marlin and tuna. First-time fishers can have a hard time mastering the art of using baitcasting tackle, but it can be mastered with practice.

1. Take up the line. Hold until your bait or bait is 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) from the tip of the rod. If you have a sinker or float attached to the line, it should be 6 to 12 inches from the tip of the rod.

2. Hold the reel properly. With your thumb on the reel, grasp the rod behind the reel. Bait rods have the same design as spinners, and like spinners, most fishermen cast with the same hand they rein in, so if you like to rein with your rod behind the reel, you'll need to switch hands you vote.

You may want to rest your thumb on the spool at a slight angle rather than laying it flat on the thread. This will give you more control over the flow of the line during casting.

4. Press the reel release button. Baitcasting reels made since the 1970's have mechanisms that separate the reel spool from the handle so they don't turn during casting, allowing for longer casting times. The first such models had buttons on the side of the reel; most models today have a release lever behind the reel that you press down with your thumb when you place it on the reel.

5. Bend your casting arm. You'll want to bend the elbow of your throwing arm so that your elbow begins to approach a right angle. As you do this, lift your pole until its tip is slightly above vertical. This will give you the correct positioning to send the line.

6. Swipe the lever forward until it reaches eye level. This is about 30 degrees above horizontal, or the "10 o'clock" position. When you do this, lift your thumb off the reel spool far enough that the weight of your bait or bait pulls the line off the spool as it is pushed towards the target.

If you're casting with a long-handled baitcasting rod like those used in saltwater fishing, you'll need to use your other hand as a fulcrum from which to turn the rod while casting.

7. Press down on the reel with your thumb and stop when the bait reaches the target. This is similar to pressing a button on a spinning reel to brake the line; however, not using your thumb fast enough can cause the spool to continue spinning after your bait hits the water, creating an overrun or "bird's nest" that you must stop before retrieving Straighten the bait before returning it.
